Exploring Hairstyles: Celebrating Seasonal Changes

Every year, either on or before my birthday, I get a haircut, and it is always something different from what I am currently wearing.

My last dramatic hairstyle was in September when I went with bright red highlights (I am a big fan of red on me), leaned into my natural curls, and went for a significantly tapered “

In contrast, today, I cut my hair short—about 5 or 6 inches off the end—steered towards my natural brunette with some glaze to give it depth, got my bangs back (this is a staple in the cooler months for me), and got a very messy/shaggy cut. It’s almost a bit French. Je l’aime.

Let me show you a before and after.

Before: Autumn

After: Winter

I have always loved experimenting with my hair. I remember in 8th grade, my science teacher had referred to hair as “dead cell” and that stayed with me since! So, I experiment all the time — and lucky for me, my hair grows really quick (knock on wood). As a result, I am not scared to try something, even if a few weeks later, I realize I don’t like it (which has never really happened). Color/cutting my hair in various ways allows me to express a part of my inner self in that current season of my life.

It’s funny because when I was in the early years of my college year, I wouldn’t even get a haircut with layers. I would request the absolute bare minimum be cut from the bottom. Then, in 2005, I went to Stephen Knoll in NYC, spent around $400, and got my first highlight, which I fell absolutely in love with! And I just realized that this October it will be 20 years — so I think I’ll go back to them as a milestone and see what they can do with my hair! It’ll be a nice full circle!

Anyway, here are some photos from the moment that would become a game changer for my hair styles going forward.

So, if you are struggling between “should I” and “should I not,” I’m here to encourage you to say YOU SHOULD! It’s just hair—if you don’t like it, change it back!

Live a little!

Cheers!
