January 12: SLEEP!

When you are tired, SLEEP! So often, we power through whatever our day demands of us. When we finally get in bed for the night, our brain works overtime to figure out the details of the next day. It’s like we never shut down! And I’m here to tell you, it’s not fair.

We don’t let our body or mind rest and there lies half of your future health issues. Please put down whatever it is you’re doing, grab your favorite plush item and head to bed. Sleep, for 30 minutes, an hour or two or nine. When your body needs rest, give it.

If you have a tough time falling asleep, here are two suggestions I have that work like a charm for me:

  1. Put your phone away. Don’t sleep with it. I know, I use mine for alarms too, but I’ve stopped taking it to bed with me, instead I’ll leave it on the night table. That light from your phone is more distracting than you give it credit for.
  2. Use the 4-7-8 method (plenty of info online if you google it). I fall asleep before I reach a 4th cycle.
    • Breathe in through your nose for four counts.
      • This allows enough oxygen to enter your body.
    • Hold for seven counts.
      • This allows the oxygen to travel through your body and into your bloodstream.
    • Breathe out through your mouth for eight counts.
      • This slows the heart rate and releases a greater amount of Carbon Dioxide from the lungs.

I hope these super simple steps work for you as well as it does for me.

Happy Sleeping!
