April 5: Your Health, Your Priority
I’ve always been relatively active – dance, gym, kick boxing, zumba, aerobics, yoga. You name it, and I’ve tried it, BUT I’ve never been consistent with any of it. Add to that my absurd love affair with food, and I’m basically a walking disaster. And I didn’t really care, until I hit my 30s.
It’s a strangely funny thing, isn’t it? We only have one body yet we mistreat it continuously, depriving it of rest, proper nutrition, maintenance, etc. We don’t recognize its importance until one of two things happen:
a. something happens to us or
b. something happens to a loved one.
There are exceptions, of course, but most of humanity falls in one of these two categories. We all know that nothing is more important than our health; it’s a knowledge that resides in everyone’s back burner, but not one we pay much attention to — at least not as early in our lives as we should.
I wish I had taken better care of myself in my 20s, so that finding the right balance between enjoying food, fueling the body, working out and getting sufficient rest wouldn’t be such an overwhelming struggle. So, if you find yourself neglecting your body, then please take a moment to acknolwedge the damage that has already been done, but more importantly, to realize that the path to a healthier life is not an unattainable goal. Cut out the sugar from your diet, go to sleep a little bit earlier, eat (small portions) frequently, and keep your body moving! Know that it is not an easy task, falling off the wagon is a regular occurrence, but just like everything else in life, persistence is key. Every time you fall, you must get up and try again. Eventually, that will become the new norm and your future self will thank you for it.
I’m not here to tell you how to do it (haven’t even figured that out for myself), but I am here to give you a gentle nudge, hoping that you’ll do a little more for your body tomorrow than you did today.
Cheers to your our health!
